A bit late to the party, we finally got to try out Microsoft’s ambitious hands-free controller, Kinect, and we pretty much think it’s awful. Albeit, the only game we managed to demo was Kinect Adventures, famously seen on Jimmy Fallon, the tech was what was most unimpressive. After flowing through a river of rapids, we started on part two, which was an on-rails token-collection mine cart minigame. After a slight technical hiccup (which was blamed on “hardware still in development”), we got rolling. Bluntly put, the game was gimmicky and stupid, and not at all beyond the tech that my QuickCam had six years ago.
While a lot of the boring experience could have been attributed to the software, the actual Kinect hardware was terribly unresponsive and laggy, something that we had not expected. Simply navigating menus proved to be inconvenient at best, and throughout the entirety of the demo, our movements were misread and sometimes ignored completely. Microsoft’s official position on the Kinect hiccups were stating that it’s is still in development, and doesn’t necessarily represent the final product. With only a few months before Kinect hits shelves, we’re calling BS.
Don’t get us wrong, we certainly understand that Microsoft isn’t necessarily marketing to the hardcore gaming crowd. That being said, when the tech is fundamentally flawed and the games (at least the ones we’ve played) are generic at best, even a sale to the casual crowd will be tough.
Stay tuned to Piki Geek for more blatantly honest PAX impressions.

It might not work great, but I’d be surprised if the tech wasn’t more advanced than your QuickCam from six years ago. Try to think positively. Thomas Edison discovered a hundred ways of how not to invent the lightbulb before he got it right. This is just humanity discovering another way of how not to do motion detection.
Since when did Thomas Edison invent the lightbulb ?.

Thomas Edison improved the light bulb
Too bad you had this experience, we had a different one: http://bit.ly/dj6Sih ,maybe its due to the camera setup?
Yea, you can’t deem a beta product ‘awful’. Few months or not, few months is a ton of time to develop. I don’t think they’re passing any kind of physical boundaries at this point with development(those milestones are met), but I would bet it’s mostly making performance and bug adjustments (afterall this is hardware, I’d hope you’re that far along at this point). And yes, calibration is important and takes time. *end ramble*
Well, to be fair, you have a lot more riding on the success of the Kinect, as your site name is “123Kinect,” so I wouldn’t be surprised if your opinions were coated with a thin layer of bias.
Well, I see what you mean, but we aim to provide you with the truth on Kinect. Let me tell you why.
1) Microsoft better bring it! Because, if Microsoft is under performing with Kinect, and its loyal customers (advocates) would say it was, then we (and everybody else) would be getting a better device or better software sooner. However, we just feel it is working and gives a great experience.
2) Furthermore: we lack influence to control all the other hundreds of articles out there that are positive on Kinect. So, this is not a one time thing.
3) Finally, our visitors have no interest in showing love for Kinect in sharing their experiences, however, they are very excited when they tried it.
See my point?
FYI, since Kinect is still in development I have heard that there will be a minimum of 2 more firmware releases between now and when the product ships. I’ve seen a game go from unplayable garbage to a-list in a two week cycle. There will definitely be improvements to the firmware.
As far as games and lag, that is entirely up to the developer. If it is coded intelligently, it will work great. If it is coded poorly it will be less responsive. There are infinite ways to manipulate input and output through code and some of them are much better, faster, and smaller than others.
For the PS3 fanboy making comparisons to the Eye Toy, let us know when the Eye Toy can truly track in 3D space and not just fake it.
PS3 = $399 for a bundle with a PS3, Camera, Move controller, Move game, Move demo disc.
$29.99 for the navigation controller (nunchuck).
Add $49.99 for each other player you want (and another $29.99 if those players want the navigation controller as well.)
Xbox360 = $299 for a bundle with Xbox360 (4GB model; $399 for 250GB), Kinect sensor, Kinect game.
Add $0 for every additional player.
Full body 3D tracking with no added cost for additional players? Advantage – Xbox.
Kinect is friggin stupid
Awsome info and right to the point. I don’t know if this is really the best place to ask but do you folks have any thoughts on where to hire some professional writers? Thanks
Well I definitely liked reading it. This subject procured by you is very useful for proper planning.
You are a very clever individual!
Well written! It could be amazing when you followed up on this matter. Regards!
Wow! Thank you! I continually wanted to write on my blog something like that. Can I include a part of your post to my blog?
Thank you for another great article. Where else could anyone get that kind of info in such an ideal way of writing? I have a presentation next week, and I am on the look for such information.
