Pixel Force: Halo Game Trailer Drops

It's Retro!

We’ve had quite a bit of de-make news in the last few days, originally with the DJ Hero C&D, then the announcement of Super Smash Land. Today, we were hit with a bit of a surprise: a game trailer for a new NES-style Halo de-make trailer as well as a demo landed on our doorsteps earlier today. Check out the trailer and impressions below:

Legendary de-maker Eric Ruth, famous for his Pixel Force versions of DJ Hero and Left 4 Dead, has moved onto the Xbox’s flagship series, Halo, for his next big project. Using the Contra structure as a basis for gameplay, PF Halo plays very much like the old-school run-and-gun classic. The build we were given took us through the first four chapters of Halo: Combat Evolved, following the locales and plot as accurately as a 2D platformer could.

Mapped like an NES controller, A jumps, B fires, and Select tosses grenades. The first level was, admittedly, a cakewalk, but once Elites and Hunters were regularly thrown into the mix, the difficulty ramped up significantly. Thankfully, Eric abandons any form of a “lives” system, simply taking Master Chief back to the most recent checkpoint after dying, making the game far less frustrating than it could have been.

We tried one vehicle stage during out playtest where we drove a Warthog “space-invader style” down a straight path, which was fun, if not a bit too easy. Eric promises a few other vehicle sections, including a Scorpion segment he states “will have **** blowing up all over the place,” so we’re looking forward to that. Each chapter features a newly-introduced enemy (stage one, an Elite, stage two, a Banshee), Mega Man-style, which are then integrated into later stages in the game. Chapter four’s battle with the Jackal left our thumbs sore and egos broken. Seriously, f*ck everything about that boss.

Much like the previous Pixel Force de-makes, Halo runs inherently on PC only, simply restricting the visuals, audio and gameplay to that of the NES. That being said, not only does the game feel great, but the pixel art graphics and chiptune remix inspired by the Halo franchise looks and sounds fantastic. Of course, we recommend one of these to get the full experience.

Ultimately, we were stoked to try the game out, and while Eric states he’s still adding stages and fixing bugs, the game already plays quite nicely. You can expect Pixel Force Halo’s exclusive release here on Piki Geek sometime near the end of January.

Rock. Sauce. They should do this with so many modern games. Why isn’t Microsoft just paying this guy?

This is an amazing game… the only problem is you have to restart from the very beginning ever single time you play.
