New Oddworld Games Will be an RTS Based on Farmville and Munch’s Oddysee HD

If you were gaming in the late 90s/early 00s, you are probably already familiar with Oddworld. We already knew that Just Add Water would be spreading the joy to this generation of gamers with four titles this year, but next year may be just as exciting for Oddworld fans. Or it might want to make them jump off the nearest cliff, depending on how they look at the latest set of announcements from JAW.

According to Eurogamer, JAW has announced that they’re working on the formerly-canceled Oddworld: Hand of Odd. Hand of Odd is going to be “casual rather than intense”, and will be taking some mechanics from Cityville and Farmville. Uhhh… okay then. I’m not exactly sure how they plan to get away with making a Farmville-like RTS, but since they’re considering iPad, Android tablets, Facebook, PC and Mac platforms I suppose it could make a little more sense. It’ll still probably piss off the majority of Oddworld fans just by tempting them with the possibility of a new way to play Oddworld and giving them mindless Facebook games. Hopefully though, JAW means it’ll be like Plants Vs. Zombies casual (that is, awesome), not Mafia Wars casual (I don’t think these even count as games).

In what most would consider to be happier news, JAW also announced that an HD remake of Munch’s Oddysee for PS3 is in the works, and will be released in October. They are currently in talks with Microsoft about releasing Munch’s Oddysee though XBLA, but it’s not going so well right now. It’s sort of strange that it’s not coming to the 360, seeing as how Munch’s Oddysee was an Xbox launch title, but Microsoft apparently turned down the HD remake of Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath so I’m not too hopeful for an Xbox 360 release.

[Thanks, Anthony]

An HD version of Stranger’s wrath would be pretty great, it would break of the monotony of the generic that is our fps games.

The Oddworld games have always been charming. I’d like to see another quality addition to the series.

I’ve never played any of the Oddworld games. Maybe I should get on that
