Robert Daly, head of Pipeworks Software, is very proud of his Green Beret background, which was touted in many interviews discussing the studio’s Deadliest Warrior spin-off game.
After all, the Deadliest Warriors show on Spike TV regularly hosts members and veterans of the armed forces as warrior experts, so it makes sense that a former Special Forces man is heading up the development of the game, right?
Unfortunately for him, it seems he made up the whole thing. Jeff Hinton, owner of the Special Forces forum ProfessionalSoldiers.com and a former Green Beret himself, has uncovered Daly’s military records, and apparently the Special Forces have never heard of him. And he would have gotten away with it, if it weren’t for those darned kids!
Not surprisingly, the Green Berets are not particularly fond of impostors. Hinton warns the gaming industry to beware of liars who would use the reputation of the Green Berets for “financial gain”, adding that “the real Special Forces soldiers aka the ‘Green Berets’ take a very dim view when an individual uses our title and our reputation, a reputation we forged in blood, for personal or political gain.”
The Deadliest Warrior show features military experts discussing the hypothetical deadliestness of various historical warriors. The game, as you would expect, is a fighting game that serves to answer the burning question of whether a ninja could beat up a Viking.
Hint: he totally could.
And that’s not likely to change with this new revelation, although it is nice to know that Daly’s been ousted. I guess “I’d tell you but I’ve have to kill you” works a little too well when it comes to gamers.
