Ubisoft’s Server Change Will Make Some Single-Player Games Temporarily Unavailable

+

How can the servers be down?

Ubisoft is moving their online services, which includes their controversial DRM measures, which will make a few games – even offline ones – completely unavailable in the process. This list includes predominantly older titles like the original Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell Conviction. In addition, the online component of many additional titles will be temporarily offline.

The following games will be offline for the unspecified period: Assassin’s Creed (Mac version), Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. 2, Might & Magic : Heroes VI, Splinter Cell Conviction (Mac version), The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom, and The Settlers (Mac version).

Recent releases like Anno 2070, Driver: San Francisco, and the Settlers Online will be unaffected whatsoever by the temporary blackout. Any other title that uses UPlay, however, will have their online services disabled.

Though the list of single-player games left incapacitated during the outage is short, it’s another reason to frown upon excessive DRM. Since when is it acceptable to turn off your customer’s own purchases whenever your company wants to tinker? My cable provider messed up my TV service for two days and I got nicely reimbursed for it. Want to pay me for my unplayable Assassin’s Creed, Ubisoft?
